Welcome to the Biophotonics group website!

The group is headed by Dr Lynn Paterson and we work on optical manipulation, microfluidics, imaging and nanoparticle sensors and apply these techniques to the life sciences.

We are based in the Institute of Biological Chemistry, Biophysics and Bioengineering at Heriot Watt University in the School of Engineering and Physical Sciences.

We develop light-based tools and apply them to challenges in life science. For example, we use optical tweezers to manipulate single cells in order to study them in isolation.
